Certification and Meaningful Use of EHR Technology
The Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs provide financial incentives to healthcare providers who meaningfully use certified EHR technology to improve patient care. To qualify for incentive payments, providers must demonstrate meaningful use by meeting specific objectives and thresholds. The program is structured in three progressive stages, each with increasing requirements:
● Stage 1: Focuses on capturing and sharing health information electronically.
● Stage 2: Emphasizes more rigorous Health Information Exchange (HIE), expanded e-prescribing, incorporating lab results, electronic transmission of patient care summaries across multiple settings, and increased patient and family engagement.
● Stage 3: (Advanced requirements, if applicable) Providers begin by meeting Stage 1 criteria during the first two years of attestation, then progress to Stage 2 requirements thereafter.
